There are so many reasons why I love doing spiritual direction with people. I love hearing the stories of who people are, who they are yearning to be, who they sense God created them to be, what God is calling them to and then going about the work of weaving a life of integrity, wisdom, joy and peace by having the courage to follow the breath of the Holy Spirit in one’s life. It is deeply sacred, meaningful, inspiring and connective work. You’ll find a few thoughts below of how I think spiritual direction serves and honors people’s soul, life, work, and relationships…

a song written on every heart

As a spiritual director, I find my role is to listen for the Holy with you. Together we listen for the stirring in your life, your soul’s whispers to you, calling you into deeper connection with The Divine, your own soul, and in authentic relationship with others. I’ve come to believe that we all have a song woven into our beings. When we take time to be quiet and listen for that song then we can discern how to live that song, embody that song. In living our heart song we experience greater peace in our lives, a greater sense of life-giving meaning, and a greater connection to The Divine, our souls, and others.

a light within every soul

God bestowed each of us a beautiful, bright light housed in our souls. It’s the piece of God within us that shines from our beings, directs our lives, and nourishes us along the way. Life can get busy and incredibly full and heavy and weighty at times. We can lose sight of the fact that we have this bright light within us and a song written on our hearts. Sometimes spiritual direction is about finding our way back to our core, the core light of our beings and allow this place to guide us forward.

a sacred space to share

For some people what is needed from a spiritual director is sacred space to share what hasn’t worked for them about religion and Church. They need a place to speak openly about their thoughts, feelings, fears, wounds regarding the Church, so that they can heal from the past and then begin an authentic journey with a loving God finding what does work for them. They seek a life-giving relationship with a loving God and need to honor the very real obstacles that get in the way of cultivating that relationship.

the reminder of God’s love

One of the key aspects of spiritual direction for me as a spiritual director is reminding people how deeply they are loved by our loving God and to work to take that love in, be transformed by it, and share it with the world.

paying attention together with intention

So whatever your heart, your soul, your spirit, your being is asking you to pay attention to, we’ll make space to listen and discover together guided by the presence of the Holy Spirit who is always in our midst.
